We're on a mission to transform the IUD insertion process.

LumenGYN’s IUD inserter technology eliminates the separate, painful uterine measuring step (“sounding”) by integrating depth measurement directly into the insertion device.

The Problem

IUDs are an effective form of long-acting contraception, but fear of pain during insertion remains a major barrier to patient adoption. Standard insertion relies on two separate invasive steps, with two instruments passing through the cervix: first rigid rod to measure uterine depth by feel, followed by IUD inserter itself. Manual sounding is uncomfortable for patients and carries risks of misplacement or uterine wall puncture if depth is misjudged.

The Solution

We are developing a device that uses integrated infrared (IR) fiber-optic sensors to measure uterine depth in real time.

  • Consolidated Procedure: Combines depth measurement and deployment into a single tool to remove the manual sounding step.

  • Objective Data: Replaces subjective "by feel" depth measurement with a visual indicator for placement feedback.

  • Workflow Alignment: Designed to integrate into existing clinical workflows and billing codes.

Market Context

  • Addressing Unmet Need: Clinical survey data indicates 87% of surveyed providers agree eliminating manual sounding would yield a reduction in patient pain.

  • Device Delivery Model: The system utilizes a reusable, rechargeable smart handle paired with single-use disposable inserter tubes.

  • Strategic Position: Offers a path for product differentiation as legacy IUD inserter patents reach expiration.
